During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time of great change for your body.  Many women experience a range of issues any time during their pregnancy. As regulated health professionals, chiropractors may focus their practice on specific population groups such as pregnant women, children and babies. At present there is limited available evidence for the effectiveness for chiropractic in treating conditions specific to these groups such as colic, feeding problems or morning sickness in pregnancy. Many chiropractors complete extra post graduate training in paediatric and pregnancy care and are very experienced in assessing and caring for your individual needs.

Referral: Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and if your chiropractor feels your problem is not suitable for chiropractic care or needs further investigation, they will liaise with your GP and other health care providers to arrange an appropriate referral, as long as you provide your permission to do so.

Chiropractors spend a long time in their training understanding the biomechanics as it relates to pregnancy and the techniques used during pregnancy are carefully selected to minimise any risk. These techniques are gentle and the comfort of the mother is always paramount and will be adapted to suit each patient.

Pregnant patients are encouraged to tell the chiropractor how comfortable they are in certain positions.  Some chiropractors use specifically designed pregnancy cushions if they need you to lie on your front for certain techniques.

If you have had a history of neck and back problems, you may find they return during pregnancy.  A regular maintenance schedule of treatments may offer comfort for the duration of your pregnancy.

Following the delivery of your baby, we recommend you return to your chiropractor to help manage any continuing aches and pains as your body recovers.
